             Decided to take most of the afternoon off on Thursday, Jan 29th, I usually try to give myself a little break after a pretty big win.  Not sure if this is the right mentality to have since most people say to ride your rushes and take breaks on you’re losing streaks.  The way I think of it is that my hard work paid off, so I could afford a break from time to time.  Nothing too much to brag about other than finally winning my seat to FTOPS #9, the heads-up tournament.  This will be my first major heads-up tournament that I’ve ever played, I wouldn’t say my skill level and confidence in HU is technically advanced but I think I could hold my own, so it’ll be interesting how deep I can make it in this tournament.  I plan to start playing a lot more heads-up tournaments to gain more experience and will be very beneficial for me even in MTT’s when I do get down to heads-up.

            I’m only left with one more seat to win, which is FTOPS #22, probably the most prestigious event in the FTOPS series.  I’m still undecided if I’m going to buy-in directly to this $5k event if for some reason I don’t win my way via satellite.  A big reason that would prevent me from buying direct is, not even because it costs $5200, but because the tournament falls on Valentine’s Day and I do want to spend some quality time with my girlfriend.  On the flip side, having the potential to make half a million + in one tournament is very tempting.  Decisions! decisions!  I will make up my mind as the time gets closer, for now I’ll just focus on one FTOPS event at a time.  Wish me luck, say a prayer, Fedex me a rabbits foot, do whatever you do for the poker Gods to grace me with their blessings starting next week!  Here is my tournament schedule for the FTOPS series:

              It was just one of those days when I amaze myself at how far I have gotten with this game they call poker.  Everything just seemed to fall into place flawlessly today, not even just poker-wise.  I woke up with the intentions to play the usual Wednesday tournaments, but after winning some decent money the night before I decided to take the afternoon off and play only the evening tournaments.  Mainly, I wanted to spend some quality time with my girlfriend and our dog for at least the whole afternoon.  So I pre-registered for the evening tournaments starting at 5PM with the $65k and $32k, and we were off to do some errands.  We ended up dropping our dog off at the groomers to get cleaned up and in the meantime we went to the mall nearby to do some shopping.  By the time we were done shopping and picked up our ‘so fresh and so clean’ dog, I realized I was running late for the first couple tournies I signed up for.  We rushed back home and ended up being 15 minutes late and missed a total of 16 hands on both the $65k and $32k.  I even checked the hand histories for both of them and actually missed pocket aces on the big blind, which was kind of a bummer but didn’t bother me too much.  I buckled down and started playing my usual game.  Soon enough, I found myself pretty deep in the $65k with an above average chipstack for the middle stages of the tournament.  I was one of the leading chip leaders once we were in the money and maintened the lead all the way up until the final two tables where I took a pretty big beat which brought me down under 15BB.  Did a fairly good job at surviving and ended up making the final table as the shortest stack with 10-11BB.  To be honest, I really didn’t have any hope for making top 3, let alone taking 1st place, but I didn’t let that affect my play and still played my normal A-game.  Sure enough, with almost flawless play and the poker Gods shining their bright light down on me, I regained the chip-lead and had a 2-1 lead getting down to four-handed.  Two out of the three players I knew were top-notch pros which I’ve played with plenty of times before, they go by the names of “GhettoFabolous” and “bigegypt” usually I get very intimidated from these types of players when it gets down to the final table, but this time I kept my cool and played back at them with no fear in situations that I had an edge.  I knocked out “GhettoFab”, which lifted a lot of weight off my shoulders and got it down to three-handed with a 3-1 lead over “bigegypt” who sat 2nd in chips.  “bigegypt” knocked out the 3rd place finisher, getting it down to heads-up with me having a 2-1 chip advantage.  I lost the lead when my AKs got cracked by his A3s but then regained it a few hands later when my KQs won vs. his A5o.  From then on, I kept the lead and we got it in for our final hand with my AQo vs. his A9o.  I claimed the victory along with $25k!  Crazy how I went from no hope of even making top three because I had a little over 10BB going into the final table to me winning the whole tournament.  It just shows you that anything is possible at any given time as long as you keep focused and play well.  It’s pretty ironic that this was the first tourney I decided to start my ‘working’ day with and that I was 15 mins. late but still managed to get first place. 

           Simultaneously, as I was making my way to victory in the $65k, I also noticed I was doing very well in the Fifty-fifty and getting down to the final three tables I had a massive chip lead of about 4-1 over 2nd place in chips.  I also played my very best in this tournament and got very lucky in a lot of situations, managed my chips well and made it to yet another final table.  It was pretty smooth sailing until it got down to three-handed and that’s when things really started to heat up.  I outlasted the 3rd place finish and started to play heads-up.  This heads-up match was probably one of the longest and most epic battles I have ever experienced online, lasting at least one and a half to two hours.  My opponent was a decent and winning player according to his success in past tournaments, but still felt like I had the edge even though when we started playing heads-up he had a 2-1 lead over me.  I did my absolute best and couldn’t really do much more when I lost a flip all-in preflop with my A6s vs. his 55.  Then with my remaining chips I called a min. raise out of position w/ K7s hoping to flop something decent.  I flopped a K high flush draw and after my opponent bet pot I shipped hoping I was a slight underdog to a pair or he would just fold and let me take the pot down outright.  He made an amazing call with mid-pair/small kicker and my live King or flush draw blanked off on the turn and river, that was that.  Took a hefty 2nd place prize and was very happy with my results.  I’ve made it to three final tables in one night, which was a great feat to accomplish, and was hoping that tonight would be the night I would capture my first double win in two big MTT’s, but I’ll settle for one 1st place and one 2nd place finish.  My first double win is going to have to wait

              It’s very apparent that this past week I’ve been running uber hot and the best part is that a lot of my luck is shining through in the final or final two tables of a tournament, which you really can’t ask for more.  When all the stars in the sky align and my focus and determination is at it’s best, I really am un-stoppable.  In the past 72 hours I’ve managed to win $40k-$45k in net profits, which is basically more than min. wage yearly salary.  Also today’s winnings pushes me way past the $200k benchmark in online poker winnings, which makes today a very historic and prideful milestone for me.  Sure it wasn’t done in one year (more like one and a half) but still is truly amazing considering I was a college drop-out working dead-end jobs a few years back with no real direction of where I wanted my life to go.  All I had were a pocket full of dreams and wishful thoughts of becoming a professional poker player, now it’s all become my reality.  I’m very fortuante, there’s not too many people out there who could say they do what I do for a living or make as much as I make for my age.  The worst misconception people may have of me is that I got lucky and all of this just fell on my lap, ignorance is bliss.  A lot of time, effort, personal sacrifices, experience, hard work, and study I have put into this game and after five years it’s finally paying off big dividends.  One thing is certain, is that I never doubted myself, not once, along the way of getting to where I’m at now.  Moral of the story, corny as it may be, is that you can be or do whatever you want in life and you can be successful doing it, you just got to want it so bad that you fall asleep spending countless hours writing about it!            The past two days have been really good to me, winning approximately $15k in the matter of 48 hrs.  I finally passed the threshold that my bankroll had a tough time exceeding this past week and a half, so kudos to that.  Today I ran deep in a few tournies including the $30k KO which is one tourney I’ve been doing really well in on a daily basis.  I also won some tourney credit by winning a satty for FTOPS #12.  Since I already have a seat I decided to use the T$ (tournament credit) to buy-in into FTOPS # 19, 20, and 24.  They don’t run satellites for these tournaments on a daily basis so using my T$ is just as good as winning satty’s for each individual event.  That leaves me with only two more FTOPS events to win my seat into, which is FTOPS #9 (the heads-up tournament) and FTOPS #22 (the biggest buy-in event for $5k a seat).  These two will probably be my most challenging seats to win since the satellites for FTOPS #9 only payout to first place out of 64 players and FTOPS #22 being the most expensive event, satellite buy-ins are anywhere from $300-$500 and are filled with top-tier players.  It will be challenging but I’ll get it done sooner than later.

         The story of the night was the $40k guarantee that I played very well in and took down 2nd for $8400.  This tournament lasted about eight hours with two hours being at the final table, which is unusual for a tournament with this structure.  Pretty much the whole table was comprised of inexperienced tournament players that really haven’t played a lot of final tables, thus, making me the overwhelming favorite.  The final table was long and drawn out due to the newbie’s folding a lot of hands trying to bump up in the money.  This made it easy for me to steal blinds and build a decent chipstack.  I got really lucky in a lot of spots and also got chopped down numerous times but I stuck with my game plan and built my chips up again.  Unfortunately, the first hand heads-up didn’t work out as I planned and got me knocked out in 2nd place, but not bad for a days work.  This win really boosted me up to my comfort zone and now I can only prepare myself for a deep run in FTOPS.  Good day!

            Played a few tournaments on Saturday afternoon since I knew I wasn’t going to be able to play the big Sunday tournaments.  Nothing much to brag about except for a small cash in the $60k Rebuy, overall still a small loss for the day.

            Missed the $50k and $40k Rebuy due to a failed alarm clock, but woke up just in time for the $30k KO.  Fate took it’s course and allowed me to take a 3rd place finish in the $30k KO for $4600.  This cash definately didn’t make up for all the losses all last week but did help one way or another.  I also won my seat to FTOPS #4 which leaves me with only five more seats to complete my FTOPS schedule, FTOPS # 9, 19, 20, 21, and 22.  Considering FTOPS is starting next Wed. it’s really time to start buckling down.

            There seems to be a threshold to my bankroll I can’t exceed and keeps bouncing back and forth to this amount.  Not sure if it has to do with the way I’ve been running or if my play has been sub-par lately.  Nonetheless, I know I haven’t been putting in as much time into studying as I used to but will start this week to better prepare myself for a big poker month in Feb.  I haven’t forgotten about the video playback about the interesting hand(s) I played last week I am supposed to post, just still trying to figure out how I’m going to get that on here, so just give me some time.

                This bad run I’ve been experiencing has affected my game and officially has put me on tilt.  At the start of the day I was really focused and played well but after a few lost coin-flips and bad beats in key situations, I totally lost my cool.  There were certain plays I shouldn’t of made and hands I should’ve played but was too afraid to lose.  This is a flaw I still succumb to when I have long losing streaks.  In other words, I’m still prone to tilt.  That is something I need to get rid of if this game is going to be the profession of my life.  I’m sure every professional poker player out there still falls into tilt from time to time but less often than most, which is what makes them professional.  There’s always room for improvement, this is one aspect I could definately improve on.

               Luckily, I cashed a few times for small amounts and have released the $550 Year End bonus FT has awarded me, so today wasn’t a total loss.  Overall, I am stuck about $10k since the beginning of the week.   So I definately have my work cut out for me in Feb. in the FTOPS and Venetian DS.  If you go back and read my earlier blog entries before the Nov. FTOPS I pretty much had the same bad streak but then made a good run during FTOPS.  I wouldn’t mind history repeating itself.

               Something unusual and rare happened in the $18k rebuy tournament today but will take me many hand histories to fully explain what happened.  So I will try and record a video playback off my PokerTracker and post it for your viewing pleasure.  That will come in later posts, till next time.

            So I ran better today, especially in the $40k Turbo, but still lost a good amount of flips like yesterday.  I’m almost convinced that I shouldn’t even push my chips in preflop anymore just simply because I lose about 85% of my races which are supposed to be 50/50 in probability, maybe slighty less or more.  Nonetheless, I’m losing more flips more than I should, it’s a possibility that I might just be paranoid in such a small sample size and maybe when I do run hot I’ll win 85% of my races, I’ll be optimistic for now and stick with the latter.  I played well and got lucky in a few spots in the $40k Turbo but made one mistake against a good player that cost me another $4k-$8k in winnings.

           I also won my seat to FTOPS #15 and another seat to FTOPS #10, which of course I will be using as credit to a rebuy/add-on.  I only need to obtain six more seats to be completely registered into all the FTOPS events I plan to play starting Feb. 4th.  My first and most recent FTOPS in Nov. I was very satisfied with my results taking 3rd in FTOPS #7 for $60k and plan to do just as good if not better this FTOPS.  Eventually, I want to earn a title as an FTOPS champion for at least one event to acquire the special gold jersey avatar and nice payday that comes with it.  Hopefully it happens next month, you’ll be one of the first to hear about it.

             Went a little crazy on tournament buy-ins today, but a lot of it has to do with the $1k Monday buy-in.  Luckily, I had a lot of small cashes and won seats to FTOPS to offset my losses just a bit.  Despite cashing a lot in my tournies, I did actually run bad today.  It’s good that I can differentiate between running bad and playing bad, which is a huge amatuer mistake a lot of people have, they tend to just blame all their losses on luck.  Today I played very well and got my opponents to commit their chips with weak holdings but yet was outdrawn on numerous occasions.  The way I’ve been running lately is that I’ll be playing well and catching cards early on in tournaments then I’d say around the mid to late stages of the tournament my luck factor rips me apart.  Taking away all my hard-earned chips in the matter of a few hands, getting knocked out in this fashion is probably the worst way to lose a tournament for a number of reasons.  1) You’re not in the money yet and if you are, the tournaments are so top-heavy that the money is insignificant, 2) you’ve already spent a few hours getting to this point, 3) the blinds are so high you can lose all your chips in one or two bad beats, and 4) the fact that you would’ve had a very nice stack for the start of the late stages had you won the all-in makes you wonder how much money you could’ve potentially made.  I don’t mind getting knocked out early in a tournament because you’ve invested a minimal amount of time and could use the extra time playing other tournaments.  I also don’t mind getting knocked out very deep in a tournament because at least the money has some significance to you’re bankroll and plus variance runs pretty high in the late stages so a good amount of the time you get knocked out in this stage is due to luck.  The worst stage in a tournament to get knocked out is the middle stages because of the reasons I stated above, it definately is the most dis-heartening way to get knocked out in my opinion.  Let’s hope I don’t run like this for long.  Here’s one hand to show an example how bad I run during the middle stages of the tournament, winning this hand puts me in the top 3 chip leaders with about two tables to go:

              Guilty as charged! Today I can rightfully admit I was what they call a “Rebuy Monkey”.  Usually I don’t utilize this style of play, only for smaller buy-in tournaments, and when I do it usually doesn’t take that many buy-ins to build a nice stack for after the rebuy period ends.  Today was a different story, I spent a whopping 6 rebuys in the $85k guarantee, 12 rebuys in the $22k,  10 rebuys in FTOPS #17 satty (which is almost a buy-in already!), and a bunch more above average rebuys in other tournaments.  I’m not too worried about all the rebuys I made today because like I said it’s very rare I play like this or that I even need to use that many rebuys to build a decent stack.  What I am bothered about is that I let myself get that carried away in the FTOPS #17 satty, I gotta realize that it’s pretty unprofitable for me to spend that much on rebuys when it equates to almost a direct buy-in to the event.  Sometimes I get carried away in just trying to win a tournament that I don’t realize what it is I’m actually trying to win, in this case a $322 seat to FTOPS #17 that I spent $222 on today. 

            On a brighter note, I did win my seats into FTOPS Main Event, FTOPS #10, and won another entry into FTOPS #13 which I’ll be using as a rebuy/add-on at the actual event.  I’m glad I finally won my seat to FTOPS #10 after numerous attempts, another entry that’s been a pain in the ass is FTOPS #12.  It’s the most expensive satellite I play on a daily basis and I’ve had so many close calls but can never close the deal.  Today, I bubbled the FTOPS #12 satty, still made some cash but really wanted to win my seat already so I can focus more on other sattys.  Aside from winning the seats to FTOPS today, I am still down in real-time money and in combination with Friday’s losses I believe I am down around $5k the past two days I have played.  Tomorrow is the $1k Monday, so hopefully I can make a deep run in it like last week.  Check out my pics from the bahamas on my ’Pictures’ blog!

             It was a very uneventful day, I was able to obtain another seat to FTOPS #7.  Since I already have a seat to FTOPS #7 they basically just give me tournament credit which is just as good as money.  The reason why I’m still playing satty’s for FTOPS events I have already won is because I am trying to accumalate enough tournament credit so that I will not have to use my own money for rebuys/add-ons.  I definately need to speed up the process in winning all my seats to the FTOPS events I want to play, considering the series starts in about 3 weeks.  I’ve also updated my photos page in my blog with pictures of our recent trip to the Bahamas for the PokerStars Carribean Adventure, check it out and leave comments!
