Experiencing a little bit of variance in the beginning of May.  On the brighter note, I only need to win four more seats to complete my schedule for FTOPS which are #13, #20, #22, and #24.  FTOPS #22 is their most prestigious event for a high stake buy-in of $2,620, this event used to be a $5k buy-in event but decided to cut it in half probably hoping to pump up the field and boosting the prizepool.  That will be a tough event to satellite into and may have to buy-in direct if it comes down to it.

My curse of the bad Sundays continues as I couldn't even cash in any tournaments.  I'm putting in some time to study on how to play in large fields and maybe it'll change the way I run on Sundays.  FTOPS starts this Wednesday and I'm really excited and expecting to do well in a few events.  Study! Study! Study!

Back to the norm of losing flips and hands where I'm dominating my opponent preflop.  I lost a good amount of money today not cashing in any tournament but one satellite for a small amount.  It was really frustrating bubbling the $75k as I had a top 15 stack for most of the money bubble duration and I got into a hand that would've put me at a top 5 stack with good contention in making the final table but I got super unlucky causing me to not even make the money.  Here's how the hand went down:

FTOPS is approaching next week and I have won seats to almost all the events I am planning on playing.  There are only six more events I need to win my way into which are FTOPS #8, #13, #20, #21, #22, and #24.  Unfortunately, they aren't running satellites for some of these events, so I am forced to win seats by playing other satellites that equal the same amount and use the tournament credits to register for the particular FTOPS event.  I was able to win a seat to FTOPS #9 today and another seat to FTOPS Main Event which I used to register for FTOPS #3.  I also ran deep in the $75k but wasn't able to make the final table.  It's not that bad of a day being that it was my first day back on the virtual felts.

  • Rest of Vegas Trip Update

Wednesday, April 22, 2009 -  It was Super Satellite day for seats to the $2500 Main Event of the Venetian Deepstack.  The Super Satellites where $280 buy-in and gives away seats to 10% of the field, for example 100 players enter the satellite then 10 seats would be awarded to the ME.  They were running three of these satellites today at 12PM, 4PM, and 8PM.  I was planning on playing all three of them had I gone busto early enough to register for the next one.  I ended up doing really well in the first one at 12PM building my stack really early and being among one of the chipleaders for most of the tournament.  Eventually the blinds got so high that everyones stack was under 25BB's and was on the brink of turning into a crapshoot.  There were 161 players that entered the satellite which meant 16 players would get a seat and I got busted in 21st place, just short of winning my seat.  Two short stacks doubled up off me when my AJ ran into AA and my 99 didn't hold up in a race vs. A10o blind vs blind situation.  This got my stack really short and forced me to make moves in order to win my seat but wasn't fortunate enough to make a comeback.  I missed the 4PM tournament and was on semi-tilt getting busted so close to winning my seat that I didn't think it was a good idea for me to enter the 8PM tournament.  I took the rest of the night off of poker to hang out with friends and play in the pit (aka - table games)

Thursday, April 23, 2009 -  Despite not winning my seat to the Main Event, I decided I was determined to play it anyway so that I would get some good practice in for the WSOP.  So I ended up buying in direct for the full $2500.  Day 1 started today starting with $20k in chips with 90 minute levels and blinds starting at 25/50.  As you can see the structure favors for a lot of play and post-flop action.  My first table started with two or three online pros which I didn't bother asking them for their online names but knew they were pros and a guy named Steve Dannenman who was runner up against Joe Hachem in the WSOP Main Event a few years back for $4.2M.  I played my A-game as usual in the first few levels picking up every small pot possible and getting in pots with speculative hands trying to hit big flops.  One hand that I played stood out in everyones head that earned me a lot of respect even from all the pros at my table.  It went like this:

Situation - The player in seat 5 was busted and was soon replaced by a big buff black guy who still had just about starting stack.  My first impression on this player just judging from appearance was that he was a meat-head as he took his jacket off shortly after arriving to the table and getting a few sarcastic comments from other players including Dannenman about how big his muscles were.  He was also a pretty flashy guy with two cellphones holstered and lots of silver jewelry, almost like he was a famous rapper, who knows maybe he was I just wasn't up to date.  Anyway, my usual assumption about these type of players is that since he was a meat-head I knew he was very prideful and egotistical, so I knew he would pull crazy two barrel and three barrel bluffs trying to steal tons of pots.  Typically, these players never like to show weakness or let alone they hate losing, they're fighters that are too prideful to lay hands down.  After a few orbits of play my physical assumption matched perfectly to the way he played as he 3-barreled three hands to the river only to muck his hand on the showdown when his opponent showed any type of pair.  Knowing all this I played this hand vs. him.

    I'm UTG w/ KsQs with blinds at 100/200 w/ 25 ante - Stack Size around 25k

    I raise to 500

Seat 5 (player described above) smooth calls, Dealer Calls, and BB calls, making a four player multi-way pot to the flop.

    {Pot = 2400}  Flop - As 9d 8c

I check, Seat 5 postures and bets 1k, Dealer folds, BB folds

At this point Seat 5 could have hit any of that but he only bet 1k giving me 3.5-1 with infinite implied odds to chase my runner runner nut flush or catch a K or Q and still be good to win the pot.  I call the 1k bet and it is now heads-up

    {Pot = 4400}  Turn - As 9d 8c (Ad)

I check, Seat 5 postures again and bets 1500

I have now missed any possible way to go runner runner flush and am now thinking about shutting down with my K high, but then I remember the past hands when he 3 barreled bluff only to muck on showdown.  Now I'm thinking he could either have a monster or a semi-bluff with J10s or 76 and my K high may just be good.  I'm thinking the Ace actually might of helped my hand, his small 1/3 pot bet is kind of fishy, and I could just flat call and re-evaluate on a safe river.  I make the call.

    {Pot = 7400}  River - As 9d 8c Ad (3c)

    I check, Seat 5 quickly bets 3k

A perfect river card peels off not completing any draws of any type.  Before I checked, I prematurely analyzed the hand.  If he had any type of pocket pair he would give up and check behind.  He was a meat-head but he wasn't dumb and a complete donk, so I would think if he had A rag suited, there was a good chance he would even check behind after me check/calling him on the flop and turn thinking I had an Ace with a bigger kicker.  A lot of my analysis was thinking if he bets a decent amount on the river it meant a last attempt to pick up the nice pot with a bluff.  There was 10,400 chips in the pot after his 3k bet laying me over 3-1 on my call, the only problem was all I had was K high.  This is a situation I know only a small percent of poker players would get themselves into, majority of the players would most likely give up on the flop, if not the turn.  A lot of players wouldn't risk a quarter of their stack with K high this early in the tournament even if they did have a read.  I end up making the call and he puts his hole cards between his pointer and middle finger and cocks it back as if he's ready to fold.  He realizes I called his river bet so he has to show first, he projects his cards face down into the muck and I show my KQ high.  The table breaks out in "Wows!" and "What the hecks!?", the player in Seat 1 even says to me "I hope you win this tourney, making amazing calls like that".  After this I felt like I had the tables respect and I could unleash a lot of my weapons with them folding small pots to me and playing with caution vs. me.

There were two key hands that I played absolutely bad before the 3rd break that pretty much caused my demise.  One, I folded AKo in the CO to a HJ steal-raiser when he opened, I 3-bet, and he 4-bet a third of his stack.  It was either 5-bet shove or fold at this point and I went with the latter just cause I wouldn't think he would 4-bet me light after he knew what I was capable of.  But kudos to him because I folded AK face up and he folded A7s face up.  On the very next hand he opened again in LP and I picked up JJ in the HJ.  I decided to 3-bet him again hoping he would think I was doing it light this time around.  He smooth called my 3-bet and the flop came 8-7-3.  He checked, I checked for pot control planning to bet the turn.  Turn came pairing the board with an 8.  At first thought, the eight helped my hand but it threw me off when he led into me for 1500.   I was a little confused after he led out into me and without thinking much about it I just flat called.  The river came a 9 and he immediately fired 6k into a pot of 5k.  I was a little flustered by his bet thinking half the time I just let him back into a winning hand and half the time he was over-bet bluffing the pot as a last attempt to pick up the pot not putting me on much of a hand.  I end up making the call not happy about it and he shows J10s for the nut-straight.  Using pot control to keep the pot small and playing passively caused me to lose the hand.  I was very disappointed in how I played the hand.  I have to admit I was on tilt after I got back from the break.  They moved me to a new table and made some bad plays getting me down to 25BB at the 200/400 with 50 ante level and I shoved from the SB to a loose HJ opener who woke up with AK.  Busto!  This is the same level I busted from the Venetian ME back in Nov., right before the dinner break.  Next time I'll try and make it deeper.

Friday - Monday, April 24-27th, 2009 -  A few buddies came into town to stay with me and gamble.  So I took the rest of the trip off from poker to play in the pit and party.  Definately was good times, but lost a good amount of money playing table games.  At least I got it all out of my system before WSOP.  I promised myself when I move out here next month I won't play in the pit at all unless I win a significant amount of money in one of my events, maximizing my spending money on tournament buy-ins and cost of living.  I'm flying back home tomorrow night getting back to reality.  From now until the WSOP at the end of May, I'll be focusing on FTOPS and winning the rest of the funds needed for WSOP.  At the same time, fine tuning my game so that I play my absolute best come WSOP.  See you guys all back at the virtual felts!

  • Vegas Trip - Day 1 - Venetian Deepstack

Woke up early this morning to finish packing and arrived at the airport a little after 10AM with my flight departing at 10:30AM, cutting it close.  I was last to board the plane and was thankful I didnt miss it.  Landed at 11:30AM and a limo guy was awaiting my arrival holding a sign with my last name in huge letters.  Gotta love having a host at a classy hotel that takes care of you.  He rushed me to the Venetian as I had a Noon tournament to catch.  I arrived to the hotel just in time to head straight to the poker room, I didn't even have enough time to check-in to my hotel room.  Today's event was the smaller stake tournament in the Deepstack series with a $340 buy-in, which was a really good warm-up for me.  I played my A-game and chipped up really well the first 6 levels.  I was chip leader throughout my first three tables and used my stack to put power plays on my opponents.  Two levels before the dinner break I raised 2.5x the BB under the gun with QQ and the opponent to my immediate left re-raised 3x my raise, leaving himself with 11k in chips behind.  At this point I had around 50k in chips at the 600/1200 level.  I decided to 4-bet shove with my QQ hoping to have him dominated or at worst flipping against AK.  It turns out he woke up with Aces and I blanked off, depreciating my chip stack to 30k.  The next two levels I ran card dry and dwindled my stack down to 20k in chips with blinds at 1000/2000.   Shortstacked at 10BB I was ready to shove with anything that looked decent, but what do you know, dinner break!  Now I had to kill an hour and come back to my shorter stack at the 1500/3000 level.  I used the hour dinner break to check-in to my hotel room and settle in.  Got back to the tournament area just on time and folded about 5 hands before I shoved UTG with K2s which was the best I've seen and didn't want the blinds to hit me which would make my stack look like next to nothing.  The chipleader woke up with KJ and easily called my shove, and busto!  I was KO'ed in 48th place out of 291 players, 27 players would make the money, and 1st place prize was $26k.  Making the money in these top-heavy tournaments is pretty much worthless as you make about $60 more than your buy-in, the real money is in the top 3 spots.  So I'm never too mad at myself for busting out close to the money.  I definately got a lot of practice and feel my live tournament play is still up to par.  Tomorrow the gameplan is to play satellites all day for the Deepstack Main Event which is kicking off on Thursday.  Hopefully I can win my seat for cheap rather than buying in direct for $2500.  The structure for this tournament is great with hour and a half levels with 20k in starting chips and blinds starting at 25/50.  First place for this tournament is usually around $200k, let's hope I run deep in this event!  If for whatever reason I get done playing satellites for the ME, I'll probably go up to my room and try to catch the $100k rebuy on FT.  Gotta get some sleep and prepare for a long day tomorrow.  Good night!

It's profitable days like these that keep me playing even through the toughest and longest losing streaks.  Prior to today's profits, my bankroll has hit a low point that it hasn't hit in a very long time, so a day like this couldn't come at a better time.  I can rightfully say I ran good today and the results prove it, I actually won a majority of my flips and even my 60/40 situations, sad but true, I consider this running good.  It started off with the $40k Turbo which I battled through the entire field of 258 players to win the $12,648 first place prize.  This is my first outright win in a tournament in a very long time, disregarding my wins to WSOP ME seats.  I was long overdue for a first place finish and am very content with the amount it was for considering how much I've lost in the past month and a half.  Then I bubbled another seat to the WSOP ME, but this one didn't bother me as much because I know I played my absolute best and it just wasn't destined for me to win.  I took $2100 for being runner up and was very happy with that.  After failed attempts to sattelite into the $1k Monday, I decided that I had already won so much money for the day that I would take a shot at the $1k Monday and buy-in direct.  Probably one of the best choices I've made all day as I did final table the tournament and got KO'ed in 8th place for $7800.  This was a huge accomplishment considering I was last in chips before the money bubble burst and was just hoping that I would be able to squeeze into the money!  I was last in chips pretty much all the way up until the final two tables and shoved my chips with impeccable timing and precision.  Probably my best short stack performance to date, which took me from trying to squeeze into the money to making the final table of a high stakes tournament.  After the dust settled, I collectively made almost $20k in profits today and had a huge boost of confidence, letting me know I still got it despite my longest dry spell in my whole poker career.  I had tons of support by my fans in the observer chat and want everyone to know that it's much appreciated.

I woke up today and told myself that if I won a tournament today that I would fly to Vegas tomorrow and catch the last few events of the Venetian Deepstack including their $2500 Main Event.  A man of my word, I booked my one-way flight shortly after winning the $40k Turbo and called my host at the Venetian and arranged a 4-night comped stay.  I may stay longer depending on how I do and may even play the Caesar's Palace Megastack Series.  These are the perks of being a professional poker player that I can travel when I please and stay as long as I want, gotta love it.  I arrive in Vegas at 11:30AM and my tournament starts at Noon, so I am pushing it, good thing for late registration which ends at 1PM.  I will try to play as many online tournaments and update my blog as much as I can while I'm out there, but my first priority is to play well and brush up on my live tournament play to prepare myself for the WSOP.

I have a feeling that my little cousin, Jon Saligumba, is already looking out for me from the heavens.  All my success from here on out will be dedicated to him and want it to be known that he is very missed and loved from his family. Twenty-Two all day!

Not much exciting news for the past four days other than winning more seats to FTOPS.  I have won seats to 8 out of the 15 FTOPS events I will be participating in.  For some odd reason, they are only running satellites to the eight events I won seats to.  Hopefully they'll open up more satty's as the time gets closer, if not I'm going to have to win satty's with the same amount buy-in and use it to register into the other FTOPS events, if all else fails I'll just buy-in direct.  So far I have seats to FTOPS # 1, #4, #7, #10, #12, #15, #17, and Main Event.  I definately need redemption  from the last FTOPS series as I did not make it deep in any events, so hopefully I can finally win my gold jersey avatar.  Another note, is that FullTilt is not only hosting FTOPS but also hosting Mini FTOPS simultaneously, which is basicallly a lower stake counterpart with smaller guarantees and smaller buyins.  I will be playing in both FTOPS and Mini FTOPS.

I did finally cash in a Sunday Major which was the $1 Million Guarantee, this is very rare for me as you all know I don't run good on Sundays.  It wasn't that big of a cash but definately a confidence booster.  One of these days I'll take home a win in a Sunday Major, hopefully sometime soon.  I missed the Sunday Brawl and $200k rebuy because I was sleeping in due to me raping my local casino for a couple thousand till the wee hours of the morning.  It's fun winning money playing online poker, but nothing beats winning in brick & mortar casinos and having the cash in your pocket.

Well here's a major update of the past week's sessions I was able to play despite spending a lot of time with my family supporting each other through the passing of my little cousin.  I've been spending a lot of time at my aunt and uncle's house, just trying to keep them company at all times.  So I've been playing most of my sessions here at their house and looks like it will be like this for the rest of this week.  I want to say I'm still running pretty bad as far as real money tournaments go, I can't say the same for satellites to FTOPS and the WSOP.  It's seems really hard for me to make final tables in regular tournaments these days, I've been losing 80% of my flips in key spots for the past two months now.  Truthfully, it's been taking quite a toll on me, to the point where I'm not surprised when I lose them but still get very angry that I'm not winning my fair share.  I'm not too sure how long this will carry on and has been my longest and dryest spell in my whole poker career.  Fortunately, I have been winning a good amount of my seats to FTOPS seats which will be kicking off next month.  So far, I've won my seats to FTOPS #1, #4, #10, #15, and #17.  They're not running satellites for more than half the FTOPS events just yet, but I'm sure they will as the time gets closer.

This past week hasn't been much of anything to brag about except for the fact that I won another $12k prize package to the WSOP ME tonight.  This gives me two $12k prize packages and four $2k prize packages for a total of $32k in WSOP prizes.  I will be using all of this for WSOP buyins and still need about $24k more to compete in all the No Limit Hold'em WSOP events this summer.  With about a month and a half to go before I move out there, I'm quite confident I'll be able to raise that extra $24k before then.  I will post my WSOP schedule in a later post.

I've decided to skip out on the Venetian Deepstack series that's going on as we speak.  I might be saving money winning most of my buy-ins to the WSOP but it sort of equals out since I am losing a huge amount of my real money bankroll.  It's estimated that in the past two weeks I am down about $20k in real money.  At this point, I cannot afford to withdraw anymore money until I can build that roll back up.  Unless a miracle happens and I can achieve a big score this week or the next, then I can maybe catch the end of the Venetian DS, otherwise my main goal is to build my bankroll up at the same time winning more WSOP packages and FTOPS seats up until I move to Vegas at the end of May.  Keep wishing me luck!

  • RIP - Jon Saligumba

I hardly ever share personal information on this blog since I mainly use it for poker content only but this entry will be dedicated to my cousin, Jonathon Saligumba.  On April 5th, 2009, he passed away at the young age of 18 years old.  He had a very rare heart condition earlier in his life and was exempt from sports like hockey, basketball, paintball, and dancing.  This was very unfortunate because Jonathon was a very active kid when it came to physical activity.  As time passed and the doctor noticed stability in his heart conditions he was cleared to participate in mild sporting activities.  The night of April 5th, he went to a local gym to play a few games of basketball and collapsed into a seizure.  A few of the kids that he was playing with quickly aided him to their best abilities and even took his phone out of his pocket to notify his parents.  Jonathon was rushed to the hospital and on the ambulance ride his pulse already flat-lined, they injected all the drugs and even shocked his body a few times, he revived for 30 seconds and again flat-lined.  By the time my aunt and uncle arrived to the hospital, he was pronounced dead.  Our whole family was hysterical, confused, and very depressed.  We all were at the hospital through the wee hours all that morning viewing the body and crying.

Jonathon was a very straight edge good kid.  Always had the biggest smile on his face and would never show an ounce of anger or sadness when out in public.  A very smart and sporty kid with a good head on his shoulders.  He had a girlfriend that cared for him and loved him very much.  The most dishearting fact about this loss was that he was my aunt's only child.  I wish I could describe to you all how great and promising of a person this kid was, but you just had to meet and spend five minutes with him and you'll already understand how big of a loss this really was.  We buried him next to my grandpa, who passed away four years ago, this spot was saved for one of uncles but decided it was best that Jon be closer to my grandpa so that he may lead and take care of Jon in the after life.

Our family has been sad and depressed a few days after he passed away, but we've been spending a lot of time together and getting into more of the accepting phase.  We've been really supportive and keeping my aunt and uncle busy by offering our company throughout the day.  This past Saturday on April 11th we had his funeral and it was truly amazing how many friends and family showed up.  I estimated around 300-400 people all different ages that attended.  It was one of the biggest turnouts the cemetary church has seen in the past year.  This alone just proves how popular, friendly, and outgoing Jon was, just truly amazing at the young age of 18 how many connections with his peers he already made.

This recent tragedy has been the main reason why I haven't been logging as many as hours as I usually do playing poker and also the reason why I haven't been updating my blog.  Just been really busy spending time with family in such an eminant time.  I want to share with all of you my eulogy that I read at the funeral service because I wrote it straight from my heart and want people to remember Jon's name.  Even if you didn't know Jon Sailgumba personally please give a prayer for him and also say a prayer for his mom and dad as well.  Thanks for taking the time to read this and remember there once lived a kid named Jonathon Saligumba and he was a great person.

    Beauty Defined by Fate

Where to begin?  How do we start picking apart the foundation of a promising kid like Jonathon?  Let’s start with a simple smile.  Almost all of my fondest memories of Jon was by constantly elevated cheek bones and a display of pearly white teeth.  Smiled so much it was borderline sinful.  This isn’t any ordinary smile either, like the forceful ones you mask during a single-shot photo, these were genuine smiles that had a subliminal message screaming “I love my life and I am at peace with myself!”.  This joyful energy that radiated from him was highly contagious and manipulative.  Let’s zoom in, natural physical talent fused with an immense passion and a knack for competition molded Jon into such a dynamic athlete.  From slapping amazing shots in hockey, to clean crossovers in hoops, evasive maneuvering in paintball competitions, or smooth footwork expressed in his dancing.  Undoubtedly, his intelligence was up to par with his physical talents, Jon was as universal as you can get.  Throw in a loving family, great friends, a beautiful girlfriend, a willingly supportive father, and an amazing mother that truly gave him the world, this you will see comprised his larger than life heart.  It wasn’t that his heart wasn’t strong enough for him, it was that he was too strong and talented of a person for his heart to handle.

Where are you now Jon?  Are you alone?  Are you scared?  I had a great vision the other day.  I imagined Papa awaiting to embrace you as you enter this newfound life.  After a long comforting hug, expressing to you that you will never be alone, he grabs your hand and escorts you through the gates of Heaven.  Jon is no longer alone.  You walk side by side, hand in hand, along this path with the most divine and surreal scenery.  In the distance, you are approaching what seems to be an illustrious house.  The closer you get the more you come to realization, Papa has already begun to build his kingdom here with his bare hands as he did in his past life, starting with this home.  He has wasted no time in making sure we have a place to call home for when we all arrive as time destines us to be all together again.  Jon is no longer scared.  As you arrive to the front gate of the house, Papa opens the front gate for you to enter, and as you stroll down the walkway to the front door you look to your left and to the right.  You couldn’t help notice the beautiful garden that Papa has nourished since he has arrived, you give a little smirk and think to yourself "some things never change".  As you enter the front door of the graceful house, Papa says “I have a surprise for you, my anak (Tagalog for son)”.  He leads you through the house and straight to the backyard, there you see a huge slab of concrete which looks like to be the foundation of a basketball court and a roller hockey rink.  You look up at Papa’s stern but yet so gentle eyes and he looks down to you and says, “This is your new home now anak, this is where you will find peace, this is where you will be safe, and this is where we will wait.”

Went deep in a lot of my tournaments today but not deep enough to make a significant amount of money.  I'd like to say I played well and ran fairly good today, surprised I didn't make any final tables.  My flopped set ratio was unsually high today and got me some nice stacks in the mid levels.  Today was the first day I've ever accomplished a nice finish in the $20k Heads-up tournament which goes above my expectation since I'm not too confident in my heads-up game.  I did catch a good run of cards pretty much the whole tournament so I'm sure that was a big factor in making it that deep.  Taking 4th place money in that tournament covered a lot of my losses today and came out on top by a "peanut", so no complaining here.  I've made the professional-like decision to not go out and have a few drinks tonight, in which I usually do on Saturday nights, I plan to rest up early and be mentally prepared for the Sunday majors tomorrow.  If you follow my weekly progress, you would know I never run good in Sunday majors, but I have a good feeling about tomorrow and plan to make some deep finishes.  Wish me luck!
