The title speaks for itself. this is definately not the worst month I've had, but wasn't a very profitable one. The only reason this month has been profitable for me is because I've won so many prize packages to the WSOP including the ME, but it's difficult for me to perceive that as actual profits because I am using those funds for playing events in the WSOP. The breakdown for the past three months of this year is I had my biggest winning month in January winning $72k in profit, in February I had my biggest losing month losing about $9k. and this March I made $9k including the WSOP prize packages, but if you take those out of the equation than respectively I'm down $12k for the month. It's a little disturbing to see that I've made $91k in gross winnings this month but only profited $9k, in gross winnings that is my second biggest month after the month of January where I grossed $109k but profited $72k. My ROI (return on investment) has dropped significantly in the past two months which is why I've dropped from top 25 in ranking to top 100 from the past 4 months on officialpokerrankings.com. Another ironic fact about this month, is I placed in 9th place on the FullTilt Tournament Leaderboard for the month of March, which is the highest I've ever placed in one month but yet it was one of my most unprofitable months. I did cash in a lot of tournaments and got a few top 5 finishes in some tournaments. but they weren't for that much money. Also winning all those satellites and multi-table SnG's contributed to me placing so high on the leaderboard.
I'm not too sure why I'm experiencing such variance but I know for as bad as I run I will run just as good in the near future. So I'm just waiting for the day to come where I start running super hot, I pray it's this Sunday or even FTOPS next month! I know I'm running bad when I'm getting a lot of apologies in the chat from my opponents after they just beat me in a pot where I was dominantly the favorite and we're all-in preflop. There's some days where I am affected by the bad variance and start playing on tilt towards the end of my sessions, but there are also days when I know I play my absolute best game from start to finish but take beats that prevent me from making the big money. Truthfully, I was planning on taking another trip to Vegas for the Venetian Deepstack tournaments at the end of April, just to get some last minute live tournament experience before I play the WSOP, but the way my online bankroll is dwindling I think I would rather keep my funds online and work on building that back up. So hopefully, I make some deep finishes in the first three weeks of April and I'll re-consider going to Vegas the last week. As you can see the first day of April today did not go so well, made a few cashes but nothing significant.
I was really bothered by one hand today not only because it prevented me from even making the money by ten spots but because I believe it was a really bad play by a well respected and successful player in the online poker community. I just would not expect this type of ammatuerish play from this player and I tried to analyze his thought process after I lost the hand and could only come up with one reasoning as to why he would pull this play on me. That it was towards the end of the day especially if he lives on the East Coast and it was a smaller buy-in event and just reacted out of emotion. Here's the scenario, there are 45 players left, 36 players make the money, my opponent and I are sitting in top 10 in chips at the moment, we are two of the three biggest stacks at our table, my opponent has been opening a lot of hands using his stack to pick up blinds and antes abusing the money bubble as expected since he is a good player, and whoever wins this pot is a pretty dominant chipleader in the tournament. Comments: Knowing my opponent has been opening frequently esp. in steal positions, I decided to 3-bet my QQ in the CO. To my surprise he 4-bets me to an amount that's pretty much a min. raise, now on most cases I would just flat 4-bets here esp. with about 40bb effective stacks after my 3-bet. But I felt like his opening range is pretty wide here and his 4-bet range only eliminates a few more hands, but not much, on the low-end of his opening range. I know this because I know he knows that I'm capable of 3-betting here fairly light, so of course his 4-bet range is lighter as well. Here's the juicy part, I elect to 5-bet shove for three reasons, one) I felt like my QQ is still ahead of a lot of his 4-bet range, two) even though I have position if I flat I still think vs. this player my edge preflop is far greater than my edge vs. him postflop, let's just say I had more respect for the player than I should have, and three) most importantly I felt like with his 4-bet min. raise I felt like I still had a lot of fold equity since we are pretty deep compared to the rest of the table. You can see if he folds to my 5-bet shove he'll still have 60k in chips which is about 38bb at this level and exactly 30bb once the level goes up to 1k/2k, which is plenty enough to keep playing good poker and abusing the money bubble. In hindsight, it seems if I did just flat his 4-bet I think the results would've been the same as he flopped the nut straight and I flopped mid-set, it's just very disappointing that the board didn't pair or river a Jack for the chop. He scooped the pot and was chipleader in the whole tournament, I watched the rest of the play go down and he ended up taking 8th place. All I can reason his play for is all out of emotion and fatigue, goes to show that even respected successful players still make mistakes.
