               I was browsing through the tournament list for the day and came across this Super Turbo KO tournament with a buy-in of $55.  I noticed there were a lot of regulars playing it, so I decided to register as well.  It came to my surprise that each player only started with 300 chips and blinds started at 15/30, so basically right off the bat you’re already short stacked with 10BB.  Even though the buy-in was only $55 and there was no guarantee to the prizepool, 1st place still ended up being just above $4k.  What a fun tournament it was with a lot of open shoves right out the gate and in the middle stages came a lot of shove – reshoves.  I made a lot of the correct plays during the early-mid stages and towards the final table I was awarded suckout king of the tournament.  I went on to take the title for the tournament claiming one of the fastest $4k I’ve ever made in my life.  This was one of the funnest tournaments I’ve played in a while and can imagine playing it on a daily basis from this day foward.  Favored players need deep stacks and longer structures, I say the hell with that and just master the art of suckoutness.  Good day!

                    Monday was a bust with only one small cash in a satty.  So it seems the bad variance carried over into this working week.  I didn’t play on Tuesday because I decided to give my office chair a day off and plus I went to hang out with an old friend.  Wednesday was a breakthrough day because I finally started to run good midway through the day.  It was weird, kind of like a light switch that turned off and on.  I can pinpoint exactly what hand and what time my luck started to run better.  I wanted so bad to make it to the final table of the $100k rebuy but lost two flips and went bust.  Made it to the 25k rebuy final table and placed 7th, don’t remember how I got knocked out but I know I played well in that tournament.

                To all my dedicated readers, I apologize for the delay between entries nowadays.  I’ve been really focused on studying and playing as much as I can, I’m usually burned out by the end of the night to write anything.  Plus, it’s hard to be motivated to write when you know it’s gonna sound like this “I ran so bad…”  “variance this, variance that”  “Losing flips, I hate my life”.  I’m trying to avoid that as much as possible, but I’ll definately try to pick up the pace as far as blogging goes.  Thanks for reading anyway.  I’ll leave you guys with a hand of a bad beat I put on some player, I haven’t put a bad beat like this on someone in a looong time, you gotta make sure you say “Bink!” out loud when you see the river:

                  Made a big finish on Saturday in the $90k guarantee taking 4th for almost $10k.  I definately should’ve placed in the top 3, if not 1st place, but the way I’ve been running recently it almost seems as if FT doesn’t want me to score big. 

                  Sunday, Sunday, Sunday! are my worst days, worst days, worst days!  Not too sure what it is but I always seem to run absolutely horrible on Sundays.  To my dismay, Sundays happen to be the biggest buy-in and largest prizepool tournaments of the week and I can’t even cash in any events.  It’s very disheartening and makes me think my skill level is not fit for the Sunday majors.  I am studying a lot more now and applying new strategies, it’s still in a trial and error stage, but hopefully I can find a nitch so that I can apply my new strategies with my original style and be even more profitable.  It would definately help if I can win a flip for once, have my 60/40 or 80/20 all-in situations hold up, and maybe nail some of my draws!  I always go through these phases at least for a week or two in a month and then I make a killing the rest of the month.

                   I have now bubbled three $12k packages satty’s and it’s getting really frustrating.  That’s $36k in equity that should be padded to my bankroll.  I literally feel like throwing my laptop across the room everytime it happens.  I know I have a leak in the late stages of satty tournaments that’s causing me not to win my share of the packages, I’m in the process of figuring out what that leak is and fixing it.  Since taxes are due in about a month I am now playing 6 days a week full-time, so you’ll see me playing all the big tournaments anyday all day on FullTilt exclusively.  Just waiting for the deck to get warm and I’ll be unstoppable.

                 The past two days have been a little bit better than the past few weeks, at least I’m cashing in a few tournaments and making some final tables.  I’m hoping that I’m gradually running better and will be making deep runs more consistently by next week.  On the brighter note, since FTOPS is over I am spending and losing less everyday which gives me some time to improve my game.  Today I actually was applying some new strategies I’ve learned through studying and judging by today’s results they proved to be +EV plays, we’ll see how they work out in a larger sample size. 

                 One dilemma I’m having trouble swallowing is how disgustingly bad I’ve been running in $12k prize package satellites.  The first $12k package was for the LAPC event which awarded only first place for the package and I end up getting my chips in for the win with KK vs JJ and my opponent ends up taking the win by turning his set.  Then today I ran very good all the way until we got 6 handed in a satellite that awarded 1st-3rd a $12k package to WPT – Bay 101 Shooting Star event.  I picked up KK in late position, there was a small raise in early position and one caller, so I over shove with my 23BB stack and the early position raiser calls me and shows AA.  Situations like these happen quite frequently but it’s just the timing of it all that makes me angry, there’s no way anyone in their right mind is getting away from KK in that spot and had I won that pot I would be chip leader and pretty much guaranteed a $12k prize package.  It’s almost like FT likes to get my hopes high in winning these satty’s but ends up just teasing me :(

                   I regret to inform everyone that I’ve depleted my Pokerstars and UB bankroll, playing higher buy-in tournaments that I shouldn’t of.  It was kind of bitter sweet because first of all I didn’t have that big of a bankroll to start with on both and I blame some of my losses on FT due to multi-tabling across all three sites concurrently.  At one point, I was playing 12 tournaments at the same time which was a record for me and was definately a handful.  I decided that it’s best that I work on getting my FT bankroll back to a comfortable amount before I redeposit funds into Pokerstars and UB.

                   Truthfully, I am in a very stressful time of my life where my bankroll on FT is down to an amount I’m not totally comfortable with.  I withdrew almost a third of it to invest into some other business deals that’ll pay big dividends in the future.  I’m also worried because I believe I bit off more than I can chew when it comes to taxes.  I’m not exactly sure how much I’m going to owe for taxes in 2008 but I’m assuming it’s going to be in the range of $30-$40k because of the amount I withdrew from my account last year.  As of right now a hit like that will leave me paralyzed as far as my working capital goes (money invested to make more money).  For the next two weeks I’ll be working hard to hopefully make a $20-$30k score which will compensate for my taxes.  If not, then I’m going to have to figure something out, quick!

                 Finally back from Vegas and jumped right back into the online grind.  It seems after a two week hiatus I am still running bad online with no real results to brag about this Monday.  I don’t remember the last time I final tabled or even made a big cash in any online tournament lately.  January was my biggest winning month pulling in around $72k profit, followed by that good month came my biggest losing month in February being stuck about $10k.  I am starting to question my play and think that the regulars are starting to exploit my strategies.  I’ve already started to buckle down and study more to see if I can fix any leaks that have been the cause to this long losing streak.  I’m hoping March is at least a profitable month for me, especially cause taxes are due soon.

                 Towards the end of my Vegas trip I did play as much poker as I could.  My last blog entry left off with me making Day 2 in the Wynn Classic $540 buy-in kickoff event.  I started Day 2 with $95,500 in chips with blinds at $3k/$6k which was a little above average.  The day started with 50 players left in the field and we were already in the money.  I doubled my chips up within the first orbit to $195k, knocking out two players.  At this point I was probably top 9th or 10th in chips.  I had the chipleader three seats to my right who I played the whole tournament with since Day 1 and became really good friends with.  He was a very technical and excellent player.  He was sitting in front of just over $300k in chips and blinds just raised to $4k/$8k.  It folds to him in the hijack position and opens for a little over 2.5x the BB, I’m in the SB with A9o.  My first initial thoughts was that his opening range here is fairly wide since he is the chip leader and the BB wasn’t defending much.  I also was the only other player at the table who had an effective stack that is very detrimental to his stack.  I decided to go for the re-steal shove since I truly believed he would’ve folded about 75% of his range with my stack and padding my stack with 40-50k in chips.  He tanked it for a good three mins. and ended up making the call with a pocket pair of Jacks.  I pick up four to the A high flush on the turn but blank off and did not pair my Ace, knocking me out of the tournament in 26th place.  I really don’t mind my play here to increase my stack by almost 20% and think JJ is a very borderline hand for him to call, even though I would’ve ended up making the call as well in that spot.  I believe AA, KK, QQ he snap calls, JJ he tanks and ends up calling, any pair under JJ he just folds, AK he tanks and calls, AQ and under he folds.  So really there’s only about five hands he makes the call with and he happened to have the very bottom range of those hands.  A lot of players would’ve just folded in that spot with my chip stack and coasted to the final two tables placing higher in the money, but I like to take the more aggressive approach and chip up to play for the win.

               Overall my Vegas trip was definately a crazy experience with a lot of ups and downs and a lot of fun and drama, mostly non-poker related.  I’m probably down a few thousand dollars the whole trip but definately was time well spent.  For now it’s back to building my bankroll back up online and possibly going back to Vegas for more tournaments in April.
