             Nothing very eventful happened the past 4 days except for me winning another $2k prize package for the WSOP, other than that I’ve actually lost a huge part of my bankroll these past few days.  I’m killing every satellite I play but I can’t seem to make a deep finish in any real money tournament.  The smart thing to do would be not to enter in any satellite tournaments for the WSOP and just concentrate on the regular tournaments, easier said than done when I still need to make around $30k for the WSOP with two months to go.

             Once again, I don’t run good in any of the Sunday majors.  I really don’t know what the problem is that I’m having in these tournaments, it’s really unfortunate the biggest tournaments out of the week I can’t even make a decent cash.  My time will come soon enough, I just couldn’t wish for a better time than now.  Today (Monday), was also a bust, I got a full head of rest and managed to still play about 20 tournaments and not cash in any of them.  My breakeven streak this month officially turned into a losing month, unless I can pull a miracle in my session tomorrow.  Poker Gods please have mercy!

             One crazy hand went down while I was playing the $34k on Sunday.  It is in fact the worst bad beat I’ve ever put on someone in my whole poker career.  It was the middle stages of a tournament and it got folded to the button who opened for a little over a minimum raise.  I went for the re-steal shove with my 23bb stack with a 109s, hoping I could pick up the dead chips in the middle but the BB actually woke up with a hand and 4-bet shoved.  Well I’ll let you guys see the hand play out for yourself, enjoy!

                March 25, 2009 was a glorious day for me because I did win a $12k prize package that pays for my $10k buy-in to the WSOP Main Event plus $2k in extra cash for spending.  If you’ve been keeping up on my play, you would know that I’ve worked really hard to achieve this goal.  It was definately a lot of trial and error but all worth it in the end.  We’ll see what the WSOP has in store for me this year, I plan to play a lot more events this year than I did last year.  I quickly skimmed over the WSOP schedule and looks like there’s about 20 NLHE events including the Main Event that I would like to play, my biggest concern is that it’ll run me a little over $50k to buy-in to all those events.  As of right now, I’ve won $18k in prizes, so I’ve got quite a ways to go before end of May.

                It’s a little ironic that the first day I actually take a few hours of my day off from playing poker and only playing 7 tournaments as opposed to the usual 20-30 a day, I actually output better results in those few tournaments than I have the past month.  Raises a lot of questions and concerns about my general way of approaching the daily grind.  I’ll probably have to reassess the amount of tournaments I play a day and for how long, it could be the reason for my recent losses.

                I did make it deep in the $100k rebuy on Wed. and could’ve made it to the final table but ran into a hand that’s very very questionable, even I don’t know if I made the right play or not.  I will post the hand below and would appreciate any feedback or opinions on how they would’ve played it differently.  Just keep in mind there’s 20 players left, it’s a 6-max tournament, prior to the hand I was sitting in 8th in chips, and if I take that pot down I would be sitting pretty with a top 3 stack and a good chance to making a top 5 finish.  Here is the hand:

             Have you ever made mistakes and know exactly what the problem is and how to solve it but you keep making the same mistakes over and over again.  That is precisely what I am going through right now.  The same theme everyday, I play the best I could and build such a nice stack, and even in some of my tournaments luck is right by my side, but yet I get to the final table or close to it and I choke.  I start making really bad plays that cost me my tournament life and tons of potential money.  It literally makes me disgusted at myself for making such bad plays and especially when I work so hard to get that far, to blow it all on one play.  My problem is that I’m overly aggressive in the deep stages of a tournament, especially if I’m one of the chipleaders.  I find myself trying to force the action which back in the day I used to just wait for it to present itself to me and I’d capitalize on it.  Hence, the results I’m outputting now as opposed to a few months back at the end of 2008.  If anyone was there to witness my late stage blowups today, I am genuinely sorry and please don’t follow in my footsteps.  I know what has to be done and I’m going to apply it in my next session and all my sessions to come.  A good friend told me today that maybe the cause of me playing like this is because I “over work” myself and I should take a break.  Unfortunately, I can’t take a long break because there’s plenty of things to pay for but I have decided to take most of the day off tomorrow and only play when I’m in the right mindset.  Plus, I have a few errands to run anyway so it’ll be really beneficial to get my mind off poker even for a few hours and come back later to play the evening tournaments.

                 I’ve never experienced tilt like today in a very long time and the ironic part about it is that I wasn’t put on tilt from a bad beat or crazy suckout.  I find that I tilt more when I make mistakes and play bad.  Playing well and getting lucky I was a deadly force in the $40k 6-max rebuy pretty much the whole tournament.  We get down to the final table and I’m probably 2nd or 3rd in chips going into it.  I have good position on the chipleader and don’t see any big names left at the final table, so I pretty much was guaranteed a top 3 spot considering I continue to play good, the only problem is I didn’t.  The chipleader was raising a lot of pots and trying to use his large stack to pick up blinds and antes, as he should be.  My image is still pretty tight as I folded a lot of the first set of hands in the start of the final table.  Chipleader opens UTG+1 and I sit in the cutoff with Q9o, I decided to put in a nice sized 3-bet hoping he wouldn’t want to tango with one of the three big stacks.  Unfortunately, he flats my 3-bet and the flop comes T-8-4 rainbow, I have a gut-shot with one over.  He checks, I c-bet, he flats, turn comes blank, I think it was a duece or three, at this point I’ve already committed almost half my chips.  I didn’t put much thought into the hand and remember thinking he probably had a hand that wasn’t that strong and had a lot of good fold equity, so after he checks I shoved the rest of my chips in, he tanks it for a while and makes the call and shows KK.  The river blanks and I get KO’ed in 6th place.  Instead of waiting till the short stacks eliminated themselves I decided to spew all my chips away to the already chipleader.  I was really disappointed at myself for making such a bad mistake like this at such a crucial time and even tilted so bad that I KO’ed myself from some of my smaller tournaments shortly after.  I like to consider myself professional because I do play for a living and make a decent living at that, but mistakes like this is just very amatuerish.  I feel like this month I haven’t been playing A game but more like my B game and that needs to change soon especiallly if I’m preparing to play the WSOP in June.  I apologize to anyone who was sweating me play that final table and try your best to NOT play like that.  Overall, the day was pretty much breakeven because I couldn’t make a deep run in the $1k Monday.  Wash, rinse, and repeat.

                Judging by the results from the past three days, you can tell that I’ve been on quite a rollercoaster of bankroll swings.  It’s actually been like this the whole month of March, I just can’t ship any big wins and when I do make a final table finish it’s usually in a smaller guarantee tournament that awards me anywhere from $5k – $10k.  Relative to how much I spend on tournaments a day a win like this will only buy me 2-4 days worth of work, this explains why I’ve been breaking even this month.  It seems I have no trouble taking down satellite wins and for the most part I’m not buying into all the high buy-in events for their full price, which is always a plus.  Like every Sunday, no deep runs in the Sunday majors, I’m starting to believe that my style of play is not suited for large fields and may have to devise another approach to these tournaments, and let’s hope I run better in them as well.  I did take 2nd in the 34k which recovered most of my losses the past couple of days.  Other than that, I’m still working on winning my seat to the ME, I am losing a little confidence in these satellites but still have plenty of time to win it, so I’ll keep going at it.  People are starting to notice on how much time I dedicate to this game, I may be overdoing it and letting it consume my life, but I know it won’t be like this for long.   There’s just some goals and upcoming plans coming up in the near future that require more money, so I”m working hard to accomplish them.  Each day I’m getting more support from random fans in the chatrooms of my tables, this is very encouraging and does not go unnoticed.  Thanks guys!

                    As the norm, after running pretty good for a few days, comes a day of what I like to call “balance”.  You really can’t win all the time, no matter how well you play, it’s evident luck is still a big factor in this game.  This inevitable balance is what keeps poker a game of unknown situations and a game that cannot be mastered but only optimally played.  Unfortunately, I know luck isn’t just the only reason why I didn’t make it deep in any tournaments.  One of my biggest leaks is I’ll start off playing optimally and as the day goes on and I take a few beats here and there, my play will start to deviate from my normal game and play on tilt. 

                    I did run into a more than usual share of set over set or pocket pair vs higher pocket pair.  Basically, putting me in very tough decisions where it’s mathematically incorrect to fold but based on player specific reads and betting patterns tell you otherwise.  It doesn’t help that today was one of my biggest losing days I’ve had in a while.  Probably not the right mindset, but I woke up and had a feeling I wasn’t going to have a good day today, yet I had to see for myself.  Luckily, I have this feeling it won’t be a long stretch of days like this and could very well be a one day scenario, call me an optimist but I usually have a good instinct for these things.  Better luck tomorrow.

               Started off the day running white hot, flopping sets and winning all my races.  This got me to be one of the chip leaders throughout the early and mid stages of virtually all my tournaments.  I must admit I overplayed my big stack in the later stages of my tourneys which caused me to not make any final tables.  I strongly believe my play is definately above average but I still make a lot of mistakes that other professional tournament players have got rid of from their game which explains their frequent top 3 finishes.  Knowing and understanding my leaks is one step, fixing then is another.

                Most of the equity I made today came from winning another $2k prize package to the WSOP.  Now I have won a total of three prize packages that are worth $6k that I can use for buying into WSOP events.  I’ll keep trying to win as much as I can so I’ll be able to maxamize the amount of tournaments I’ll play over the summer.  The story doesn’t change with the WSOP ME seat, keep getting close but not close enough.  I briefly skimmed over the 2009 WSOP tournament schedule and looks like there will be 20 No Limit Hold’em Events including the Main Event that I would like to play.  Realistically, I’ll probably only play half of those events considering it’ll cost more than $50k to play all 20 events.  We’ll see how much I can make from now till the end of May and decide how many events I will really be able to play.

                It’s pretty ironic that I am currently ranked in 15th place on the FullTilt TLB but yet I am not even making all that much profits compared to the past few months.  It’s because I’ve been running deep in most of my tournaments but not cashing for big amounts, so the amount I spend on tournaments each day basically breaks me even.  At least losing isn’t a part of the equation anymore.  There were some good plays that I made today with very accurate player specific reads and one hand I took a beat on that I couldn’t help smirk at in a funny way, you’ll see what I mean:

               What do you know? I bubbled another seat to a $12k prize package WSOP ME.  I played really well the whole tournament and was chip leader for most of the duration.  It came down to HU with both of us having just about the same amount of chips.  My opponent, judging from his stats, is a rising star in the poker community who has had good results the past 3 months, definately someone to look out for when sitting at your table.  I did get really unlucky on the deciding hand which would award the seat as my opponent turned a 3 outer on the turn, I will post the hand below.  I did receive $1800 for my efforts but is nothing compared to a guaranteed seat to the $10k buy-in ME and $2k in extra cash.  I’m not sure why this is happening to me but I am bubbling a lot of these satellites and should have at least five prize packages by now, maybe I need some work on my HU game or short-handed game.  I’ll keep playing these satellites until I win one or more seats to the ME, I have no doubt I will eventually win one.

               Looks like my good run is carrying over daily as I’m making at least 2 or 3 cashes and one final table a day.  The profits are not big wins relative how much I spend on buy-ins but they are decent consistent profits, nonetheless.  Another repetitive scenario that’s been happening in my tournaments is that I’ll build a nice stack and be 1st or top 3 in chips in the early to mid stages and in the final or final two tables I’ll go from 1st in chips to last in chips and then work my way back to at least top 3 in a matter of a few hands.  It’s a rollercoaster of emotions that I could do without.  It’s a little frustrating that I can’t close out any of my tournaments and seem to be placing everything but 1st.  Undoubtedly, I am still very pleased for making any final table finish and the good money that comes with it, but it would be nice to win one for every three or four final tables that I make.

             Overall, I’m playing good and running good, so I hope I can keep this up.  There are a few leaks I could work on that I’m noticing and maybe once I plug those it’ll get me to win some tourneys.  Here is the hand that cost me my seat to the WSOP ME:

                I pretty much killed it in some of the satellites I played today.  I won another $2k prize package to the WSOP, a seat to the $1k Monday, a seat to tomorrow’s $322 buy-in WSOP ME satellite, and a seat to the 150 seat guarantee to the WSOP ME sometime in June.  It’s really comforting to know that I already locked myself into at least two WSOP prelim events and hoping I can win enough seats so that I don’t have to buy-in direct for any of the WSOP events I’m planning to play.  It’ll be a glorious day when I win my seat into the Main Event, that’s $10k less coming out of my own pocket.

                Ran deep in the $35k placing in 4th for $3k.  I definately was the favorite at my final table, being the chip leader and the morst experienced player at the table.  I went from 1st in chips and down to 8BB being last in chips after I lost a huge all-in flopping bottom two vs. my opponents flopped broadway.  Climbed back up to being 3rd in chips and coasting it until we got four handed.  I moved in with my 10BB stack on the button w/ 104o trying to pick up the blinds but the chip leader in the SB ended up calling me with KJo and held.  Probably could’ve waited for a better spot with a hand that had more showdown value but was almost positive I could’ve picked up the dead money outright. 

                It’s still been a pretty breakeven month for me as far as real-time money profits are concerned but all of the equity I have gained this month are coming from my satellite wins, which are saving me some money.  I am noticing a lot of feedback and good comments from random people in the chat boxes at my tables, if any of you guys are reading this, even if I don’t respond back because I’m too busy clicking away, just know I really appreciate the positive comments.  If any of you have any questions about anything related to poker, post them here and I’ll be happy to answer it as soon as I can.  Thanks again.
